MOSCOW, Russia – On Friday, Russian navy captain Mikhail Nenashev said that the United States does not intend to give a military response to the incident in the Kerch Strait because they understand that Russia has the sufficient means to neutralize them.
“They [US] are worried that their ships will do the same thing that happened with the Ukrainian boats that were detained in the Kerch Strait. In case of US aggression in the Black Sea, Russia is able to neutralize its ships; and has enough means for that,” Nenashev said.
“There are sensible people in the US military who are calculating this result and therefore are trying to keep the matter from escalating into a military conflict,” he added.
A few days ago, Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford said Washington was not considering a military response to the detention of three Ukrainian ships for violating the Russian maritime border and did not discuss this issue with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, Valery Gerasimov.
Previously, the United States began preparations for sending warships to the Black Sea amid the incident in the Strait of Kerch, reported the CNN news channel quoting sources.
On 25 November, the Russian border was violated by three Ukrainian Navy vessels, which were detained along with their 24 crew members for failing to comply with the legitimate requirements of the Russian authorities.
The incident in the Kerch Strait was classified as a provocation by Russian President Vladimir Putin because among the crew members of the Ukrainian ships were two agents of the Ukrainian security services. According to the Russian leader, hostility in the Black Sea is associated with the low popularity ranking of Petr Poroshenko, the president of Ukraine, on the eve of the Ukrainian elections. It is not expected he will elected to lead Ukraine and for this reason he is desperate to hold onto power.
