WASHINGTON D.C – More than 40 US senators called on President Donald Trump to conduct a multinational military operation against Russia in the Black Sea.

According to them, it is necessary to ensure freedom of navigation, as well as to demonstrate support for “internationally recognized borders” and bilateral agreements. It also notes the need to “resist the excessive claims of Russia to sovereignty.”

In addition, the document calls for NATO to increase its presence in the Black Sea, as well as a call for European allies and partners to deny Russian warships the right to call their ports for resupply and refueling. One of the points reads:

(The Senate) calls on the president to use his powers … to expand the capabilities of the Ukrainian military,

The next paragraph refers to the provision of additional assistance to Ukraine in the field of security, “especially in terms of enhancing the capabilities of Ukraine at sea.”

The document also contains a reminder that “the president is obliged by law to impose mandatory sanctions against Russia in accordance with the law ‘On Countering America’s Enemies through Sanctions’.”

The text of the document is available on the website of one of its authors, Senator Ron Johnson. The call was supported by 41 senators out of a hundred, which is a minority.

However, such rhetoric which no doubt reflects internal political divisions within the U.S, show the divisions that the U.S elite are experiencing. There can be little doubt that in reality, any U.S naval adventure in the Black Sea would be disastrous for an over-prepared Russian Federation, in its own backyard.

Provocation in the Black Sea

Earlier, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov said that Kiev plans to make a new passage for Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in turn, noted that Petro Poroshenko was preparing a provocation for the end of December on the border with Russia.

US special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker noted that Washington should consider the possibility of increasing its presence in the Black Sea.

In addition, he said that he does not exclude, if necessary, additional deliveries of lethal weapons in response to the request of Ukraine. The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that such statements are:

“non-conciliatory in nature and are not aimed at bringing positions closer within Ukrainian society.”

At the end of November, three Ukrainian ships violated the border of Russia and moved towards the Kerch Strait. They maneuvered dangerously and did not submit to the legitimate demands of the Russian authorities. As a result, ships and 24 sailors were detained. A criminal case was brought against them, they are now in custody.
