According to The New York Times, US Army Green Berets are operating on the Saudi Arabia-Yemen border to destroy Houthi rebel missiles.
With virtually no public discussion or debate, the Army commandos are helping locate and destroy caches of ballistic missiles and launch sites that Houthi rebels in Yemen are using”, The New York Times reported.
It is noteworthy that this paper, which has habitually been far from critical of US involvement in conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, pointed out on Thursday that the Green Beret operation “appears to contradict Pentagon statements that assistance American military to the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen is limited to aircraft refueling, logistics and general information sharing.”
According to two political analysts in Saudi Arabia, the presence of US Army Special Forces along the Saudi-Yemen border is not very surprising, given Washington’s willingness to do the dirty work of Riyadh.
“It’s nothing shocking,” said analyst Catherine Shakdam, a political commentator.
“I do not know if you remember, but in the past we actually discussed the presence of American troops in Yemen. It was not much of a secret. I do not know if you remember, but I did an interview with General Saleh, nephew of the ex [Yemeni] President Saleh who was actually telling me that it is not a secret to the Yemeni military that they [Americans] were in Yemen from the beginning,” she explained.
“Here we are again: what people used to call ‘conspiracy theories’ and ‘false claims’ prove to be true,” she said.
John Kiriakou, a former CIA operative, has agreed with these suspicions, saying: “I think it’s right, we should not really be surprised at that.”
