Is Russia banning Google?

Roskomnadzor  (Russia’s internet safety agency) has announced that it will block one of the main domains that belong to Google.

The ban is in accordance with the decision of December 4, 2015. After restricting access to googleusercontent.com sub domains, many Google services and third-party sites may stop working in Russia, where resources from these addresses are diverted.

The press service of Roskomnadzor maintains that the ban is in accordance with the restriction of access to the application “Zello”, and assure that this will not affect many other services. The Zello application emulates push-to-talk (PTT) walkie-talkies over cell phone networks.

The statement is vague – is this a matter of security, surveillance? We will wait to find out.
