An employee of private security company SEC of the “Winter Cherry” shopping complex in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, had disconnected the public warning system when the fire began, the Investigative Committee said.

According to the department, when the fire broke, a private security officer turned off the warning system. At present, investigators are considering his detention.
The investigators have already detained and interrogated the technical director of the company – the owner of the building, the main tenant of the premises.
“Serious violations were committed both during the commissioning of the shopping center and in the process of its operation. The fire exits in the shopping center were blocked and the investigation verifies the information about other violations reported by eye witness,” they said.
The fire in “Winter Cherry” began on Sunday on the fourth floor. Some escaped, jumping out of the windows.
As of the first half of the day on March 26, the number of deaths as a result of the tragedy increased to 64 people. Another 50 or so are missing, many of them children. This is Russia’s largest national tragedy in recent times.
Earlier, an eyewitness stated that the guards of the Kemerovo shopping and entertainment center actually blocked the passages to the safety stairs designed for the event of a fire.
This tragedy occurs on the same day as the US and EU unite to expel Russian diplomats. There have not been any words of condolences reported.
