HMEIMIM, Syria – Terrorists in Russia have attempted to attack the Russian-controled Hmeimim airbase in Syria’s Mediterranean Latakia province with an armed drone.
However, Russian air defense systems quickly neutralized the threat that was armed with a bomb before it reaches its intended target.
No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attempted attack, but there is a high possibility that it was the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front who have a strong presence in this part of the country.
This is not the first such attack on Hmeimim airbase, and rather terrorist groups often attempt to make such an attack on the fortified Russian base.
Hmeimim serves as the main base of Russian operations in the war-ravaged country. This was also the site of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s only visit to Syria since the war began in 2011.
