WATCH as Moreno vows to protect Wikileak's Assange despite Ecuador's 'uncomfortable' position'

QUITO, Ecuador - Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno affirmed during a press conference in Quito on Tuesday that Ecuador will continue protecting WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange despite it being an "uncomfortable problem", following a London court's decision to uphold his arrest warrant.

Moreno described Assange as an "inherited problem", reiterating that it is "an uncomfortable problem under every circumstance."

"For every country, a problem like this would be uncomfortable. Nonetheless, we made a commitment from the beginning of this government to keep on protecting the life of Mr. Assange, that we think is in danger", Moreno said.

The Ecuador head stated that while the London court's decision is important, Ecuador would not change its stance on Assange's case: "We will continue to protect Mr. Assange according to the international refuge laws."

Julian Assange will continue to face arrest if he leaves the Ecuadorian embassy, after a judge ruled that the arrest warrant against the WikiLeaks founder was still valid.

Assange has been residing in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, with British police waiting outside, ready to arrest the WikiLeaks founder for breaking his 2012 bail conditions.
