AFRIN, Syria – Residents of Afrin in the northwest of Syria, commented on the recent Syrian State TV reports of a deal struck between the Syrian government and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to allow forces loyal to the Syrian government to enter the Afrin region.
Authorities have not confirmed these reports.
“We do not believe that the US will protect the Kurds. It is natural that Rojava or northern Syria does not wait for this state to come and protect it,” stated one resident of Afrin, adding that “we have no hope for the US.”
Another resident said: “Since the Syrian government is a legitimate government, we do not object to the entry of these forces. If the Kurds request a day of federalism, they will ask for it from the Syrian government and not from the US, Turkey or France.”
“The US strategy depends on creating new chaos in the Middle East to pursue its interests in this region,” added another.
According to local media, armed troops are due to enter the city imminently, following a YPG-Syrian government agreement to deploy pro-Syrian government fighters on the Turkish border.
