VERONEZH, Russia – Large numbers of people were seen arriving at a cemetery in Voronezh on Thursday to pay their final respects to the Hero of the Russian Federation, Major Roman Filipov, who died in Syria last week.

Local media reported that in total up to 30 000 mourners attended the funeral ceremony as Major Filipov was laid to rest at the Alley of Heroes in the city’s main cemetery.

Major Filipov was killed when his jet that was conducting a mission over the jihadist-held province of Idlib in Syria’s northwest was brought down by Turkish-backed militants.

Rather then being captured, he blew himself up with a grenade after engaging in a gun battle with swarming militants. He killed many militants in the process.
