Venezuelan elections set for April 22, Maduro expected to win

February 8, 2018 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos - Translated from Globo.

CARACAS, Venezuela - The presidential elections in Venezuela, in which President Nicolás Maduro will contest the re-election, will be celebrated on April 22, in advance, announced the National Electoral Council (CNE).

"Presidential elections have been called for April 22," CNE president Tibisay Lucena announced after failing to negotiate between the government and the opposition to agree on the date.

On Friday (2), the approximately 600 delegates of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) ratified the ruling Nicolas Maduro as its candidate. He had already announced in January that he would agree to run for re-election.

It is expected that Maduro will comfortably win as many apolitical Venezuelans lambasted the opposition-led violence that engulfed Venezuela in the first half of 2017.

The Venezuelan presidential election was originally set for the end of 2018, but on January 23 the National Constituent Assembly announced that it would be brought forward for the first half, going on before April 30.
