MOSCOW, Russia – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke with Euronews in Moscow on Friday about the illegal US military presence in Syria, the Kurdish issue and the alleged Russian interference in the US electoral process.
“It’s clear that the USA has some strategy which I believe entails staying in Syria with its armed forces forever. They want to do the same thing now in Iraq and Afghanistan, despite all the promises made earlier. They are gearing up for separating a huge part of Syria from the rest of the country, violating Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. There they will create quasi-local authorities and will try to create autonomy based on the Kurds,” stated Lavrov.
“Playing with the Kurdish issue with a narrow understanding of geopolitical goals in the one part of this region, what the USA demonstrates now, is very dangerous. It can lead to big problems in a whole range of other countries,” Lavrov noted.
“From the very beginning of its actions in Syria, Americans bet on the Kurds and ignored Turkey’s discontent… Americans were consistently arming the Kurdish troops massively and ignoring the Turkish position… Ankara’s repeated warnings directed at Washington fell on the deaf ears,” he added.
Talking about accusing Russia in electoral meddling, the Russian Foreign Minister underlined that “there are still talks about some government intervention in the electoral process,” but he saw “not one fact.”
“Recently Associate Minister for Homeland Security, responsible for cyber-security, stated clearly that they have no evidence of Russian meddling in the internal affairs of the last presidential campaign,” Lavrov went on to say.
