Teen on trial for extinguishing cigarette on Orthodox icon

    February 8 , 2018 - FRN -
Vesti - translated by Inessa Sinchougova

A student from Krasnodar, who put out his cigarette on an Orthodox icon, has been detained by police. The legislation of some Russian regions is quite strict on blasphemous behaviour - at least, in comparison to  the now mostly secular Europe (but not in relation to the Islamic or Jewish laws.)

The 18-year-old student from Krasnodar had posted a picture to his social network, in which he put out a cigarette on an icon at the entrance to the church of Michael the Archangel.

Internet users had reported the occurrence to the police, as a result of which the young man has been detained.

The city magistrate will consider the case on February 9th.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Krasnodar Territory stated that if it is found that the young man significantly offended the Orthodox church and its believers, a criminal case will be brought against him.

Are some Russian laws too religious? What do you think should take precedence - liberalism or tradition?
