– Le Figaro, translated from French by Tom Winter –
Translator note: Le Figaro published this interview February 23, 2015. We post it today for three reasons: It is still current and applicable, and it is great background. And it is the most Russia-favorable piece I have ever seen in Le Fig.

‘the only viable and reasonable Europe: to implement a great strategic and cultural partnership with Russia, a Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals.”

The former presidential candidate welcomes the Minsk agreement. He encourages François Hollande and Angela Merkel to get closer to Vladimir Putin to build a “Great Europe” from the Atlantic to the Urals. Philippe de Villiers is the creator of Puy du Fou and the founder of the Movement for France. He ran for the French presidential elections of 1995 and 2007. He is also a writer. His latest book “Le Roman de Jeanne d’Arc” was published in November 2014 by Albin Michel.

LE FIGARO – What do you think of the Minsk agreements negotiated by François Hollande and Angela Merkel with Vladimir Putin?

Philippe DE VILLIERS – The Minsk agreements are very important because they contain four new moves. First they allowed the protagonists to get out of a logic of war. The diplomatic path of small steps augurs a possible peaceful future. Secondly, two major European states, France and Germany, led the negotiations and vouched for the implementation of the agreement alongside Russia. It is clear that neither the European Union nor America has the capacity or the will to make peace there. These agreements show that it is only when Europe speaks to Europe that a real peace becomes possible – it is the Europe of States. Third, the agreement paves the way for the only remaining solution for the territorial unity of Ukraine: Kiev’s acceptance of a specific status for the east of the country with a right to the Russian mother tongue. Finally, unlike the September agreement, it has a timetable for each phase.

Once is not habitual, so you hail the initiative of François Hollande?

Yes, because Europe no longer has to write its future with the American pen. François Hollande behaved as a head of state without concern for American instructions. He resisted the US claim to demand Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Henceforth, we must encourage France to go beyond this first positive phase of emancipation. François Hollande must now deliver the Mistrals to Russia and thus respect the commercial contract signed by France and paid by the Russians to the tune of one billion euros. It must also lift the sanctions that are today acts of war even more unfavorable to the French economy than the Russian economy, and have no effect on the American economy.

The most important thing, instead of trying to build an artificial Maastricht Europe, will be to prepare tomorrow the only viable and reasonable Europe, to implement a great strategic and cultural partnership with Russia, a Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals.

The agreement has already been violated by the Ukrainian separatists. Can we trust Vladimir Putin?

When we come back to the source of events, we see the on-going lie of the European Union and the fantasies conveyed by the Western press. The cease-fire, to my knowledge, is being observed on the front line, except at Debaltseve, a special problem that arose just before the Minsk agreements. But even there, heavy weapons are now being removed. The control mechanisms are being set up and the heads of state are talking to each other. When the media say that Russian humanitarian trucks are crossing the Ukrainian border loaded with ammunition, I wonder: at the time of the satellites that see everything, the iPhones filming for a permanent record, what are we waiting for to give us the evidence? Where are the pictures?

The concept of Puy du Fou will be declined in Russia. Is your strong support for Vladimir Putin affected?

It’s the opposite. Having come to know Russia through the implementation of this Franco-Russian project, I discovered two things. First of all, Russia is deeply European. All its culture, all its elites, and all its people look to Europe. Solzhenitsyn told me, “Do not make the mistake of turning your back on Russia. It’s about our future.” In addition, I discovered that Putin was a true head of state. I also understood why in the West the globalist elites are constantly criticizing him: America wants Europe to be the fifty-first star in the American flag. For this, it must keep the Europeans subservient in NATO. Vladimir Putin is the perfect pretext, the ideal devil. Let’s not forget the causes of the Ukrainian tragedy. First, a coup fomented by NATO.

Then a fault of the Ukrainian government, the ban on the Russian language. Finally, the American pretention of Ukraine’s entry into NATO. How could one imagine that the Russians would accept seeing NATO at their doors? Vladimir Putin does not want the dismemberment of Ukraine. He simply wants the recognition of the mother tongue in the Russian-speaking regions, a status for these regions, and finally a neutrality of Ukraine in relation to NATO.

Russia seems to be regaining some national pride. Isn’t there a risk of shifting into an excess of nationalism?

The difference with France is the following: in Russia, there is a real restoration of moral, civic, patriotic, and spiritual values. The little people learn the pride of being Russian. The Russians are told about Russia, its grandeur, its rich heritage, and its Eurasian influence. What do we say to young Frenchmen? That France is a shame, that the French are racists and that patriotism is a blemish. There is more freedom of expression in Russia than here. As Philippe Muray prophesied, we are locking ourselves into the “cage of phobes”: Islamophobes, xenophobes, Europhobes, homophobes. No one moves! And we have a political class drained, sanitized, and passed in the microwave that blesses the sharing of work between the laïcists who make a spiritual void and the Islamists who fill the void.

This does not prevent the Russians from also experiencing strong ethnic and cultural tensions?

The difference with integration “à la française” is obvious. There are 20 million Muslims in Russia out of 140 million people. Vladimir Putin applies the old prudential principle: “Live in Rome, Live like the Romans; live in Russia, live like the Russians.” In France, those who want to make believe that secularism and the “Rights of Man” are enough to solve the problem are manipulators or cowards. There is only one way to integrate in our country: by Francization!

As negotiations between the European Union and Greece trample on, could Tsipras turn to Russia?

For the European oligarchy, Tsipras is in a state of mortal sin. He will soon be immolated on the Parthenon since he does not genuflect before the euro and he confesses a Greek penchant for Russia. He finds the virtues in the devil. But the worshipers of Brussels and Frankfurt still have not understood that redemption by the euro does not work for the European economies. Greece will leave the euro: the negotiations do nothing except put it off. The whole European construction is a deadly deconstruction. Today’s European Union is a crazy thaumaturgical attempt to wipe out the states, the borders, and to deliver the peoples and the industrious activities to the masters of globalization who find immense benefits in it.

What could the Europe of the future look like?

The idea concocted today, by Eurocrats and the globalized elites of a free trade agreement that would make Europe an annex to America, turns its back on the future and on common sense. What I reproach Europe with is its becoming an American Europe – a simple economic and cultural extension of the United States. To predict the future, one could say: “the European Union is dead, long live Europe!” The true, the great Europe, that of the Atlantic to the Pacific, which finds the real cradle of its ancestral cultural alliances. That of Queen Anne of Kiev, the Russian queen who married a French king. Europe that finds the good old ideas that led the world since the experience of men invented the triptych: sovereignty, borders, identities.
