Hungary blocks Ukraine's meeting with NATO, due to discrimination of minorities

    February 13, 2018 - FRN -

Hungary will continue to exert pressure on Ukraine on the adopted law on education. This was announced on Tuesday, February 13, by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siyarto.

Hungary plans to use the country's veto power in NATO as "the only instrument by which it can protect the Transcarpathian Hungarians and make Ukraine act in accordance with international norms."

"If the Ukrainian government decides to suspend the implementation of the law, until further consultations are completed, this will be a good basis for negotiations," he said.

"If Ukraine is serious about establishing closer ties with NATO and the European Union, it should justify their expectations," he said.

The meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Commission was scheduled for February 14-15, but will not come to fruition due to the opposition of Hungary, blocking the meeting due its perceived discrimination of minorities in Ukraine.

The Law on Education prohibits school lessons of any other language but Ukrainian, even for European minorities living in Ukraine.
