AFRIN, Syria – President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised that Turkey will “lay siege to Afrin city in the coming days”, during an address to the Turkish parliament in Ankara on Tuesday.
“The preparations on the ground take time. In the coming days, we will lay siege to Afrin city,” he said.
On Monday, Syria’s state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) announced that “popular forces [the Syrian military] are to arrive in the Afrin area soon to support locals in facing the aggression launched by the Turkish regime on the area since January 20th.”
Despite international outrage, Turkey has continued with ‘Olive Branch’ operations and plans for extended operations in Idlib province. Turkey views the YPG, which is active in northern Syria, as an extension of the banned militant group the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
