In order to confront Russia, the West must study its weaknesses and remember that Moscow only respects force, said General Nicholas Carter, the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Great Britain, speaking at the Royal Institute of the Armed Forces.
According to him, the allies must identify the most vulnerable points of Russia in order to be able to “act asymmetrically” if necessary.
In particular, the countries of the West should create strong institutions in neighboring states, so that they “become confident” and “withstand the pressure” – both external and internal.
The general also considers it important to increase energy independence of Western countries, to maintain the sanctions regime against Moscow and “tell the Russian population what is really happening.”
“We should identify our own vulnerabilities to Russian influence and disinformation, then resolutely act against it.” We must demonstrate our determination,” the head of the General Staff called.
In his opinion, it is also necessary to maintain NATO’s military presence in Eastern Europe.
“We must continue to improve NATO and recognize that the combat readiness is related to the speed of threat recognition, speed of decision-making and the speed of deployment. It is necessary to return to the annual or biennial mode of conducting Alliance exercises at all levels: from strategic to tactical, ” the general said.
Carter is confident that Russia is able to begin “hostile actions” quickly and in such a way that no one will expect.
“They use a multimodal approach using conventional, non-traditional and nuclear components – a hybrid option where small green men, big green tanks and huge green rockets can be used. Their thinking is flexible – their General Staff is able to change, evolve, easily learn lessons” , said Carter.
He also noted Russia’s “significant shift to action in cyberspace.”
In this regard, the head of the British General Staff urged the government to invest more in the defense sector, otherwise the United Kingdom will not be able to “keep above the level of its opponents.”
What interest Russia may have in attacking the United Kingdom – it was not clarified.
