The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has shown an ‘extreme refueling’ of pilot groups “Falcons of Russia” and “Russian Knights”, during the exercises held at the Lipetsk Aviation Center.
The Ministry stated that the crews of the fighter and bomber jets of the Russian Air Force practiced mid-air refueling during daylight and nighttime hours, the planes were refueled one at a time and in pairs.
In total, more than 20 crews of Su-35S, Su-30SM, Su-34 and Su-24M aircrafts took part in the exercise.
The refueling took place at altitudes of more than 5 km and at a speed of about 600 km / h, while the distance between the jets and the Il-78 tanker was less than 20 meters.
At night, refueling was carried out using illumination installed on the fuel tanker.
Air refueling is a necessary element in the training of fighter jet pilots, which allows to significantly increase combat range of the aircraft and perform tasks at a considerable distance from the bases.
