AFRIN, Syria – Kurdish military officer Khalil has accused the United States of having “double-standards” as they have offered no support Turkish-led forces invade the Syrian northwest canton of Afrin that the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) control.
“What we demand from the US, in particular, is to fulfill the promises to the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) while they were combating terrorism, embodied by the Islamic State [ISIS], that is to protect the liberated areas, including Afrin, which, as we can see, has been fighting heroically and fiercely for seven days against the Turkish occupation, which is regarded as a foreign occupation,” he said passionately.
Turkish President Recep Tayyp Erdogan has vowed to remove the YPG from control in Afrin, as well as in Manbij in northern Syria. Unlike in Afrin, Manbij hosts a US base and US military personnel. It remains to be seen how they will react to Turkish-led forces invading Manbij.
