ANKARA, Turkey – The Anadolu news agency quoted Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying on Thursday that his country has no desire to attack Syrian government soldiers and will not deliver the first strike.
“At some point they brought down our plane and we retaliated. At the moment they don’t attack us, and that is why we have no reasons to see them as a target,” he said.
“Our government knows that the aim of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) is the division of Syria. And we, the opposition and the government, at the present moment come out in favor of Syria’s territorial integrity,” he said.
He then expressed confidence that the Syrian government “will not cooperate with terrorists from the People’s Protection Units and the Democratic Union Party”.
The comments come as the YPG has begged the Syrian Army to intervene against invading Turkish-led forces in the Afrin canton. Full details of the YPG asking for the Syrian government’s help can be read here.
