AFRIN, Syria – Yesterday, Avesta Khabur, a militant for the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) was revealed to have conducted a suicide bomb mission against Turkish-led forces in the village of Hemmam in Syria’s northwest canton of Afrin. Details of her attack can be found here.
The YPG were lambasted for adopting Islamist tactics such as suicide bombing, that ISIS and Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra readily use to great devastation. However, YPG activists made up a narrative that she blew herself up with a grenade when surrounded by Turkish-led forces.
Since then, the YPG has released a tribute video to Khabur that shows the 20-year-old preparing for her suicide mission, including a war dance.
Turkish-led forces nine days ago began its invasion of the Afrin canton to completely expel and defeat the YPG in this part of Syria. Ankara considers the YPG to be a terrorist organization.
