IDLIB, Syria – An elite Palestinian militia has arrived in the northwest jihadist-held province of Idlib to assist the Syrian Army in its fight against terrorist organizations, primarily the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front.
The Palestinian militia, Liwa al-Quds, leadership did a field tour on Tuesday by inspecting the front lines and defensive positions in the towns of Sinjar, Istabalat, Umm Mweilat and other sites in the southern Idlib countryside where battles are being fought between jihadists and pro-government forces.
It is unclear yet whether they will take on defensive duties or be used as assault units to liberate sites from jihadists.
The Liwa al-Quds was established in 2013 by and for Palestinian refugees in Syria, primarily those in Aleppo, although the group did a recruitment drive in Homs in June 2017. They have since gained fame for their bravery and performance on the battle field, particularly in the liberation of Aleppo in late 2016.
