Operation "Olive Branch" divides Turkey and NATO allies

"The principle of the territorial integrity of Syria remains fundamental; the Kremlin closely watches the actions of the Turkish army in the area of the city of Afrin in northern Syria." said Kremlin press-secretary on Moscow's official position on the Turkish operation in Syria.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the United States had taken a course toward the creation of alternative 'authorities' on Syrian territory. The Russian military is in constant contact with all sides and is ready to immediately provide humanitarian assistance. The discussion of the situation at the UN Security Council shows that NATO partners are somewhat irritated at the situation.

The French idea to hold a meeting at the Security Council in regard to the Turkish operation "Olive Branch", was so unwelcome by Ankara that the Turkish Foreign Minister compared his NATO allies to terrorists. Russia, unlike Western countries, does not have to perform diplomatic miracles in this matter - the position of Russia's diplomats is unambiguous.

"We are closely monitoring the progress of the operation, the Russian representatives are in contact with both the Syrian leadership and the Turkish leadership. As before, we consider the principle of preserving the territorial integrity of Syria as fundamental," said Peskov.

The Turkish military has so far occupied 69 Syrian settlements. The operation came about as a direct result of Washington's ill-considered policy. The Americans announced they were going to employ a 30,000-strong contingent of Kurdish border guard forces to control the north-eastern part of Syria. The border guard was, of course, a pretext - but the concern of Turkey, which had a potential hotbed of instability under its nose, was first underestimated by the United States and then simply ignored. Ankara had no choice but to intervene.

"The United States has taken the course of creating alternative power in a part of Syrian territory, Washington is supplying modern weapons for transfer to the Kurdish militia. In every possible way, they steer the Kurds away from dialogue with Damascus. There is nothing to do but to assume that this is either a misunderstanding of the whole situation or provocation," - said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

But such a 'misunderstanding' is proving to be bloody. Kurds report the deaths of four Turkish soldiers. Tensions increase as Iraqi Kurds promise to provide their fellow men with armed support. Meanwhile, Ankara shows no sign of stopping - the military grouping will be increased by at least one thousand more soldiers and officers.

"When it's over, we'll go straight back, we're not interested in staying there. Turkey has no plans of occupying any country, all our people support the operation in Afrin" Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan underlines.

In the meantime, Turkish special forces have entered the city with the support of tanks.

The wildest illustration of the chaos created by the US - is that both countries' aircraft leave from the airbase at Incirlik. Turkish aircraft depart to bomb Washington's Kurdish allies, and American aircraft, to support the Kurds.
