Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev called on the presidents of Russia and the United States to tackle personally the problem of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles.
In an interview to Kyodo, he called the Treaty ‘the most important document signed during the Cold War era’. Gorbachev stressed that the document played an important role in easing the tension between the countries.
Gorbachev called on Putin and Trump to instruct the ministries of foreign affairs and defense to solve the problem, which, according to the ex-president, “is mostly technical.”
The renunciation of the Treaty would harm the whole process of nuclear disarmament.
The Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles; the Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START III) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons are a single whole, and without one of them they will be completely destroyed”, Gorbachev stressed
