ANKARA, Turkey – The Turkish Minister of Defense, Nurettin Canikli, stated on Friday that the Turkish military will battle with Kurdish forces in the Afrin canton of northern Syria.
“The threat level against Turkey is increasing day by day. This operation will be carried out and we will combat terrorism,” he said.
Turkey considers the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) as the Syrian branch of the outlawed Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Although the US arms, funds and supports the YPG, it contradictory considers the PKK as a terrorist organization as well.
The minister also claimed that an agreement has been reached between Ankara and Moscow, with Russia to withdraw its forces so the Turkish military can engage with the estimated 8,000-10,000 YPG fighters in Afrin.
