After calling for help, then retracting it, Kurdish authorities decide they do need the Syrian Army's help against Turkish aggression

January 26, 2018 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

AFRIN, Syria - It appears that Kurdish authorities have concluded their internal squabble and have decided that in fact they do need help from the Syrian Army to defeat Turkish-led forces in the northwest canton of Afrin.

Afrin canton is controlled by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and with the Turkish-led aggression officially beginning on Saturday, the YPG initially refused any help from the Syrian government to face this threat.

Then a few days ago, a YPG official made a statement calling for help from the Syrian government, which was then denied by another official, but now confirmed with a release statement.

The Afrin Self-Administration Office (a regional extension of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party) posted a statement (seen below) officially calling on the Syrian government to fulfil its duty to protect the region – a part of sovereign Syrian soil – from Turkish invasion by deploying its military, Muraselon reported.

The statement did make the effort to point out that Kurdish forces had protected Afrin from terrorists and invaders for the last six years and that they would continue to do so even once the Syrian Armed Forces stepped in, Muraselon's report continued.

A key part of the statement reads:

“We call out for the Syrian government to protect Afrin and Syria’s borders by deploying the Syrian Armed Forces to protect Afrin borders.”
