MOSCOW, Russia – Russian veteran and leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov stepped down from presidential race in order to endorse Lenin State Farm director Pavel Grudinin as the nominee, on Saturday, during the party convention in Moscow.
The decision to nominate Grudinin for the presidential race was supported by 303 other congress delegates. For the first time, a non-party candidate will run from the Communist party.
In his nomination speech, Grudinin assured that he will coordinate his campaign with Communist headquarters which he specifically asked to be led by Zyuganov.
“Because only he can lead us to victory,” he added.
The presidential election will be held on March 18, 2018. The election campaign officially started on December 18.
