If the initiative of the President of Ukraine to hold a referendum on joining NATO is implemented, this will only aggravate the split of the country, said Ukrainian political scientist Andrei Yermolayev.
“The President’s initiative on holding a referendum on joining NATO may soon be held – I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this initiative would occur amid a postponed decision on the status of Donbass, and virtually no policy on Crimea.”
“The referendum on NATO in a limited territory of Ukraine with the participation of only that part of the population that is controlled by Kiev, can become a point of no return to the single, integral Ukraine. The conclusion is unambiguous – an attempt to implement a referendum on NATO, regardless of how the society is now set up for it, can lead to the irreversible process of a farewell to the Donbass.” Yermolayev emphasized.
