More than a million euros will be allocated annually by the European Union to finance the working group on strategic communications East Stratcom, established in 2015 to combat propaganda.
For the first time since the creation, the funds – 1.1 million euros per year – will be allocated directly from the EU budget, and not collected from EU member states or sought through cutting other items of expenditure.
The funding of this working group is already laid in the EU budget for 2018-2020, writes The Guardian. This was preceded by the warning of the head of the European Council Donald Tusk: he said that one of the real problems of Europe is “cyberattacks, fake news and hybrid war.”
Tusk’s words refer to the recent speech of British Prime Minister Theresa May, who accused Russia of interfering in the elections and placing fake news in the media in order to “turn information into weapons” and sow discord in the West.
The East Stratcom working group was created to counter false and misleading information about the EU. The group is based in Brussels and has 14 employees.
