French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has called for no interference in Lebanon, obviously referring to Saudi Arabia, without explicitly mentioning it though.
It is noteworthy that France and Lebanon are maintaining very close relations and have been allies for decades.
Previously, the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation which led to a political crisis in the country.
“In order for there to find a political solution in Lebanon, its state officials must be granted a complete freedom of movement, while non-intervention should be the fundamental principle,” he told at a meeting with his European counterparts in Brussels on Monday.
In his first television interview since his “resignation” from Riyadh which was broadcasted yesterday, Hariri confirmed that he would return to Lebanon very soon to formally announce his resignation in accordance with the constitution.
He also hinted at the possibility of withdrawing his resignation and talking with the President Michel Aoun and all the relevant parties to solve the matter the different way.
The Lebanese Prime Minister announced his resignation while visiting the Saudi capital city of Riyadh on November 4th, citing the growing influence of Iran and Hezbollah in the region, as well as possible attempts on his life, as the main reasons behind his decision.
The Lebanese security forces have since denied reports that the intelligence units had foiled an assassination plot, and have thus debunked certain rumours that were spreading at the time of Hariri’s resignation.
