BEIRUT, Lebanon. The Anti Syria/Iran/Hezbollah-leaning Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has stepped down.
Hariri, himself the son of the late Lebanese business tycoon and the former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri who was assassinated in February 2015, is a dual citizen of Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.
He resigned from his position while visiting Saudi Arabia as the Lebanese Prime Minister.
In his statement, Hariri said he was resigning mainly due to an increased role of Iran and Hezbollah in the country, as well as throughout the region, a thing that he, a staunch supporter of Saudi Arabia, sees as a threat. He also said he feared of getting assassinated.
Over the past few years, both Iran and Hezbollah have become much stronger and way more influential, particularly due to their victories against ISIS and other terrorist groups.
Hariri, on the other hand, was a staunch supporter of the FSA/Al Nusra Front-linked terrorist groups.
It is not exactly known whether Hariri stepped down on his own or by obeying the will of his Saudi masters who might be interested in the outbreak of another political crisis in Lebanon, now that the country is led by a President with clear pro-Syria/Hezbollah leanings.
In the past, Hariri’s political tempo was usually dictated by the Saudis (and Americans too).
For its part, the Information Office of the Lebanese President Michel Aoun, said the President is waiting for Hariri to return to Beirut so that he can explain the reasons behind his resignation.
