Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance and a representative of the Assyrian minority in Iranian Parliament, Yonathan Betkolia, yesterday met with Hamoudeh Sabbagh (himself also an Assyrian), a recently appointed Speaker of the People’s Council of Syria, in Damascus.

During the meeting, Betkolia expressed his appreciation that after almost 70 years a second Assyrian had been elected as the Speaker of the Parliament in Syria. He expressed congratulations to Mr. Sabbagh on this historic occasion and wished him a lot of success along the way.

Both sides exchanged views regarding developments in the region and stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability throughout the Middle East.

They discussed the atrocities committed by ISIS and other terrorist groups against the Assyrian population in Syria, particularly the abductions of civilians and clergymen, occupation of villages and the destruction of Assyrian churches and ancient archaeological sites.

Yonathan Betkolia then invited Hamoudeh Sabbagh to visit the Urmia region of Iran which is the home of Iran’s Assyrian minority. In turn, Sabbagh committed himself to continue the dialogue and boost cooperation between the two sides.

The Assyrian representative from Iran also met with the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid Mouallem.

The Assyrian Universal Alliance (AUA) is an umbrella organization for Assyrian organizations throughout the world.
