Iran’s National Security Council today announced the closure of the Iranian airspace to the Kurdistan autonomous province of Iraq in the wake of the forthcoming Kurdistan independence vote.
According to Iranian media, the Council adopted its decision during this morning’s session.
This means that all flights between destinations in Iran and the cities of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in Iranian Kurdistan, are now cancelled. No planes taking off from Iraqi Kurdistan province are allowed to cross into Iranian airspace either.
“The decision was made in accordance of the request of the Iraqi government”, the spokesman of the Council, Kiwan Khosrovi, was quoted as saying, adding that the decision of some Iraqi Kurdish officials on holding the referendum will limit the possibilities of a constructive dialogue with Baghdad and Iraq’s neighbours.
In addition, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps today began with massive training exercises at the border with the Kurdistan province of Iraq.
In the past, Tehran has issued multiple warnings to the ruling Barazani regime of Iraqi Kurdistan, saying there will be consequences should the province ever secede from Iraq.
For Monday, the ruling Barazani regime of Iraqi Kurdistan province, is scheduling a referendum on independence. The move is being opposed not only by Iraq and its neighbourng states, but several major world powers, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States including, as well.
