Facebook users interested in topics such as “How to eradicate Jews” and “Hitler did nothing wrong”, were reportedly promoted to advertisers, thanks to the algorithm used by the world’s most popular social networking site.

An investigation by ProPublica NGO has led to exposure of an algorithm that paid the users $30 to promote their posts. Facebook suggested groups they target, among them being 2,300 people interested in the topics such as “Jew hater”, “How to burn jews” and “History of why jews ruin the world.”

ProPublica selected the groups and within 15 minutes the ads were approved. Their investigation also revealed that a Facebook group titled “Hitler did nothing wrong” was labeled as “fields of study.”

After being contacted by ProPublica, Facebook eventually decided to remove the aforementioned groups.

Rob Leathern, Facebook’s product management director, said the company is considering changing the algorithm, currently in use for creating and tagging the groups within the network.

“We know we have more work to do, so we’re also building new guardrails in our product and review processes to prevent other issues like this from happening in the future,” Leathern told The Guardian newspaper in a statement.

Last month, Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg decided to start a massive crackdown on “hate speech” within the social networking site, following Charlottesville incident.
