The Russian Defense Ministry have announced that the town of ‘Uqayribat, the largest stronghold of ISIS in central Syria, is back in the control of the Syrian Army with the support of Russian aviation.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that: “The last major center of resistance of terrorists in the central part of Syria has been destroyed. For now, units of the Syrian armed forces are cleaning out the suburbs of Uqayribat.”
The ministry explained that “units of the fourth tank squad of the Syrian government forces in cooperation with parts of the Fifth Volunteer Division and the military intelligence forces, was able to liberate the town of’ ‘Uqayribat.”
According to the statement, the Russian aircraft destroyed the terrorists’ defense and armor points, as well as their artillery firing sites, command and communication centers.
The town was initially taken by government forces yesterday, but an overnight counterattack by the terrorist group allowed them to take the pivotal crossroads town.
