“Poroshenko: The USA will be more active in resolving the conflict in Donbass”

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he had received assurances from the US authorities that they would be more actively engaged in the process of settling the situation in south-eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian side welcomes the increase of Washington’s role in the process of settling the situation in the Donbass, said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. According to him, during his visit to the United States, the American authorities gave him the assurance that Washington would be more active with regard to the conflict in the south-east of the country.

“We are in favor of maintaining the Normandy Format and the Minsk Agreements and have been assured of this, in particular in terms of increasing the role of the United States in the process,” Poroshenko said on Sunday in a Ukrainian television broadcast.

According to him, US President Donald Trump will use his first meeting with Vladimir Putin to convince Moscow that Russia’s attempts to exert pressure on Kiev are of no use. In addition, Poroshenko is in favor of adopting a “road map” to Minsk II “clearly determining concrete dates, when and what must be achieved”.

In early May, the US Senate approved the draft federal budget up to September 30, 2017, which provides that the United States will continue to provide financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of nearly $ 410 million (367 Million Euros), including military support.

In 2014, the Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, which unilaterally proclaimed their independence after the coup d’état in Ukraine in February of the same year. According to the UN, the conflict has already killed 10,000 people.
