Note from J. Arnoldski: This Normandy Four is set to take place in the context of Ukraine’s increasingly aggressive behavior. Kiev’s evermore frequent ceasefire violations, failed attempts at an offensive in southern Donetsk, and the assassination of DPR commander Motorola have left the Minsk Agreements nearly in tatters. DPR head Alexander Zakharchenko’s latest statement has made it clear to the world that Donbass is nearing the end of its patience.
Despite previous suspicions, the Normandy Four indeed plan to meet in Berlin on October 19th.
During telephone talks on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and French President Francois Hollande agreed to hold a meeting in the Normandy Format on Berlin on October 19th. The Ukrainian president’s press service reported:
“The sides agreed to hold a meeting on October 19th in Berlin between the heads of states in the Normandy Format in order to encourage Russia to fulfill security policy issues related to the Minsk Agreements.”
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has also confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in the Normandy Format on October 19th in Berlin.
The Russian president’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, told journalists: “Tomorrow the president will travel to Berlin, where there will be an evening, not even a full-day working trip during which he will hold talks with Merkel, Hollande, and Poroshenko.”
Peskov added that the heads of states’ assistants worked extensively yesterday and this morning to arrange such a meeting.
