The State Duma adopted at the third reading a bill that prohibits the cultivation and breeding in Russia of genetically modified plants and animals, except for scientific projects.
“It is forbidden to use for crops (planting) seeds of plants whose genetic program has been changed with the use of methods of genetic engineering, containing genetically engineered material whose introduction can’t be the result of natural processes, except for crops (planting) of such seeds when carrying out examinations and research projects,” the bill says.
Under the new rules, importers of GMOs are required to undergo a registration procedure. A prohibition on the importation of such products into the country will happen after studying the effects on humans and the environment.
Violators of the new rules are threatened with administrative responsibility: officials will have to pay a fine of 10 to 50 thousand, and legal entities — from 100 to 500 thousand rubles.
