President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, while talking about the situation in the Crimea, did not mention that Russians live on the peninsula. Not only do they live there, but are a majority ethnic group.

"The current situation in the Crimea is painful for all- Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar peoples and other nations living on the peninsula. But the international front of the de-occupation of Crimea has become stronger," said the head of state.

Almost 70% of the population of the peninsula is ethnically Russian, as evidenced by the census conducted in 2014.

Crimea became a Russian region following the results of a referendum held in March 2014 after a coup in Ukraine. 96.77% of the voters of the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% of Sevastopol voted for reunification with Russia.
