WATCH as Cuban President announces he will step down in April

December 22, 2017 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

HAVANA, Cuba - Cuban President Raul Castro announced he will step down as the country's leader in April 2018, speaking at the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba in Havana on Thursday, despite previously announcing he would step down in February.

"When the new National Assembly is formed on April 19, my second and last term as the head of state and government will be over. Cuba will get a new leader," the Juventud Rebelde newspaper quoted 86-year-old Castro as saying.

Raul Castro has led the country since 2006, after his elder brother Fidel stepped down citing health reasons.

His step down may allow a new generation of Cuban communists to govern the island-nation as him and his brother have ruled since the success of the Cuban revolution in 1959.
