Ukraine assured UN resolution will start the "liberation" of Crimea

    December 20, 2017 - FRN -

Kyiv welcomes the adoption of the UN resolution on ation of human rights in the Crimea, according the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's website.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry believes that the support of the Ukrainian position in the Crimea issue testifies that the issue of Crimea is not over, and the international community sent a clear signal to Moscow.

"The world is closely watching the actions of the invader, and therefore the perpetrators of the persecution and violations of the rights of the Crimeans must be held accountable. The aggressor state must stop the arbitrariness in the temporarily occupied territory and ensure the observance of international law. The next step should be the de-occupation of the peninsula." - it said in a statement.

In the UN resolution prepared by Ukraine, Russia is "urged" to comply with 12 recommendations to "immediately put an end to all violations and infringements of human rights with respect to the inhabitants of the Crimea."

Seventy states voted in favour, against - twenty-six, and seventy-six countries abstained. Among those who supported the initiative - most European countries and the US, as well as Georgia. Against were Russia, China, India, Serbia, Armenia, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, South Africa and others.

Many countries in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as Latin America, abstained.

Vice Speaker of the Crimean Parliament Remzi Ilyasov said that the resolution runs counter to the position of the Crimean people, and the UN discredits itself by its decision and nullifies the authority gained over the years.

Crimea became the Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014, where 96.77% of the Crimean voters and 95.6% of Sevastopol voted for joining the Russian Federation.

The Crimean authorities held the referendum after a coup in Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly stated that Crimean residents voted democratically, in full accordance with international law and the UN Charter, to reunite with Russia. According to President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is "closed for discussion completely."
