A study has been published on regions of Russia with the highest and lowest salaries.

The leaders, in terms of the share of highest wages, were the northern regions of the country, as well as the Far East and Moscow.

Almost 24% of the working population of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District earn more than 100 thousand rubles a month (USD 1,700). At the same time, the share of low-paid vacancies is only 0.6%. Nominal figures don't quite paint the whole picture without taking into account living costs in each specific geographic area. The Yamal- Nenets region can boast more purchasing power than for residents of Moscow, for example.

The second place is Chukotka, 24% of its residents also earn 100 thousand rubles and more. The three leaders are completed by Moscow - 17% of the working population of the Russian capital receive a salary of at least 100 thousand rubles.

The next six regions of Russia with the highest salaires are the Nenets Autonomous District, the Magadan Region, the Sakhalin Region, Khanty-Mansiisk Autonomous Area, the Kamchatka Territory and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The Murmansk region closes the top ten (8.1%).

According to this study, the lowest income in Russia is earned by residents of the North Caucasus and central regions of the country. Here, the share of those who receive a salary of 100 thousand rubles and above is only 0.48 to 0.56% of the able-bodied population.

In nine regions of the Russian Federation, the proportion of working people who receive less than 10 thousand rubles a month (USD 170) exceeds 25%. The leading place of this statistic is taken by Dagestan (35%),  and Karachay-Cherkess Republic (30.5%) in second place.

In general, 11% of the working population in the country earn less than 10 thousand rubles a month, which, according to the study, is a social problem that needs to be addressed.

Overall, poverty in Russia has fallen by more than 35% since 2000.
