MOSCOW, Russia - Russia's Central Election Commission (CEC) formally barred Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny from running for president in the 2018 Russian presidential elections, in Moscow on Monday.

According to the CEC, Navalny is not eligible to participate in the presidential elections since he was conditionally sentenced for embezzlement of "Kirovles" and has an outstanding conviction.

After the decision was made, Navalny called on his supporters to boycott the election.

“The procedure that we’re invited to take part is not an election,” he said. “Only Putin and the candidates he has hand-picked are taking part in it.”

“Going to the polls right now is to vote for lies and corruption.”

The presidential election will be hel
d on March 18, 2018. The election campaign officially started on December 18.

Putin is expected to win the election as he has an 80% approval rate.
