Navalny nominated to run for President, despite criminal conviction

Alexei Navalny has been officially nominated for the presidency of Russia.

Navalny, who has been conditionally convicted on embezzlement charges, cannot legally run for president in 2018. He has the right to participate in the presidential campaign only after 2028.

According to the law "On Elections of the President of the Russian Federation", a person sentenced to imprisonment for committing a serious crime can run for head of state only 10 years after the date of the conviction. However, the Central Election Commission will consider the documents of all applicants, and carry out a pre-election check. This step is most likely simple PR on behalf of team Navalny.

A candidate for president of Russia can be nominated by the party or self-nomination. To self-nominate, one needs to collect at least 500 preliminary supporters.
