Moscow does not support Ankara's rhetoric on Jerusalem

    December 13, 2017 - FRN -

The Kremlin is aware of the position of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Israel , but Moscow does not share it. This was stated by the presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the words of the Turkish leader, who called Israel a terrorist state and proposed the proclamation of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

"We are aware of this position of the head of the Turkish state," Peskov said. "We know this position, and in this case it does not coincide with our position. The position of Russia on Jerusalem and on the Middle East settlement is very well known. " Minister Lavrov and President Putin have both stated that the redirection of the Capital to Jerusalem is destabilising to the region, but have refrained from harsh assessments.

Peskov refrained from assessing how far such a view of Erdogan could be constructive in the issue of settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

During the opening speech at the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, the President of Turkey called Israel a state of "occupation and terror."

Earlier (December 6), US President Donald Trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the beginning of preparations for the transfer of the American embassy from Tel Aviv there.
