WATCH: US may ban Russia from Olympics 2018 - Putin

    November 15 , 2017 - Fort Russ News -
    by Inessa Sinchougova

On November 10, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) stated that it had obtained a samples database that confirmed allegations of widespread state-sponsored doping in Russia between 2012 - 2015, which was made public in the McLaren report.

“Despite repeated calls for Russia to cooperate with international bodies to stamp out doping, Russian authorities have always denied the state’s role in the scandal.” – it said in a statement.

The “new information” could mean that Russia is blanket-banned from competing at February’s PyeongChang Winter Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make the final decision on 5 -7 December.

In 2016, a WADA commissioned report by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren found that “more than 1,000 Russian competitors in more than 30 sports were involved in a conspiracy to conceal positive drug tests over a period of five years. Investigations also uncovered sample tampering at the Sochi Olympics, including the switching of samples through a hole in the laboratory wall.” Um, really?

Russian officials have pushed back on doping allegations, arguing that they are politically motivated.

President Vladimir Putin suggested that allegations of a state-sponsored doping program in Russia is an attempt to sow discontent ahead of the country’s presidential elections, and retaliation for alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election. The 2018 Olympics and Russia’s 2018 Presidential Elections are only one month apart.

The world’s leading anti-doping agencies (part of INADO – Institute of National Anti-Doping Organisations, as mentioned in the speech of the President of WADA on RT, "group of NADOs") have come together to demand Russia be blanket-banned from the Winter Olympics in 2018.

These include the US Anti-Doping Agency and UK Anti‑Doping agency, who have warned the IOC "that its continuing reluctance to hold Russia to account for one of the biggest scandals in sports history at the 2014 Sochi Games, threatens the future of the Olympic movement."

The joint statement NADOs said: “The IOC needs to stop kicking the can down the road and immediately issue meaningful consequences. The failure to expeditiously investigate individual Russian athlete doping poses a clear and present danger for clean athletes worldwide and at the 2018 Winter Games.”

The President of WADA clearly disagrees with the biased rhetoric. It's important to remember that while there are individual cases of dishonesty - across all countries - the goals of geopolitics can transcend into slander across all spheres; sports, religion, history, music, the arts, and one of the most common - Hollywood representation.

Such slander is a double edged sword (or perhaps even triple-edged, if there was a way.) Not only does it discredit Russian athletes in the eye of the public, it adds to the performance pressure of the athletes themselves, as well as having the ability to agitate a certain demographic of voters (sports fans and athletes) against the Presidential Elections that follow soon after.
