WATCH: Lavrov calls Pentagon's claims that its in Syria legally as "absurd"

November 16, 2017 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

MOSCOW, Russia - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called the Pentagon statements that US troops are in Syria legally as 'absurd' during a joint press conference with his Argentinian counterpart Ambassador Jorge Marcelo Faurie in Moscow on Thursday.

"It is illegitimate because it does not rely either on the decision of the UN Security Council or on the invitation of the legitimate government," Lavrov said.

This is just the latest backlash against US Secretary of Defense James Mattis who said that Washington's intervention in Syria had been approved by the United Nations.

Earlier today Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that "We were surprised to hear a statement made by US Defense Secretary James Mattis when talking to the US media representatives on November 13 that the US Armed Forces are in Syria "with the permission of the UN,"" as reported by FRN.

The criticism of the lie was not just reduced to Russian officials, with Jim Jatras, a former US diplomat and adviser to Senate Republic leadership, also saying that Washington is violating international law by intervening in Syria following on from Mattis' false claims, as reported earlier today by FRN.
