Vesti - translated by Inessa Sinchougova

In Prague, unknown people have desecrated a monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Konev. On each of the four sides of the pedestal, the vandals painted in red the dates 1956, 1961,1968 and 2017.

The act of vandalism was carried out against the backdrop of the efforts of the municipal authorities to form negative public opinion. Additional explanatory tablets may be imposed on the monument or its transfer to the territory of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Czech Republic .

The marshal is accused of involvement in the tragic Hungarian events of 1956, the erection of the Berlin Wall in 1961, and the suppression of democratic efforts to reorganize the socialist system in Czechoslovakia in 1968. Attackers inflicted the date "2017" also - the year when calls for the removal of the monument to the Soviet commander intensified.

Recently, the Embassy of the Russian Federation protested against the initiative of the authorities, noting that the monument to Marshal Konev is a tribute to the memory and respect of all who liberated Czechoslovakia from Nazi occupation.

In an interview with the media, Czech President Milos Zeman expressed his respect for Marshal Konev. The leader of the republic noted that the monument to the marshal should be in Prague, as well as many other monuments to all those who fought for the liberation of the Czech people.
