    Russian bombers keep pounding ISIS in Syria's Abu Kamal

    MOSCOW, Russia. On Friday, six Russian strategic bombers Tupolev Tu-22M3 targeted ISIS positions in the eastern Syrian town of Abu Kamal and its countryside, causing several casualties in the ranks of takfiri group.

    According to a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry, six long-range Tu-22M3 bombers took off from their bases in Russia and flew over Iran and Iraq, before unleashing series of air strikes against the terrorist group ISIS in the town of Abu Kamal and its surroundings, located in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ez Zour. 

    The bombers destroyed a number of ISIS command centers, gatherings and movements of terrorists, as well as armored vehicles.

    The statement pointed out that all targets were successfully destroyed.

    In the meantime, units of the Syrian Army managed to re-enter the strategic town of Abu Kamal after temporarily withdrawing few days ago due to severe pressure by both, ISIS and the US-led international coalition. 

    The town of Abu Kamal was the last ISIS stronghold in Syria prior to its last week’s liberation by the Syrian Army.

    Earlier this week, however, ISIS terrorists managed to re-enter certain parts of town, while mainly resorting to suicide bombings. in addition to the alleged disruption deliberately made by the US-led coalition forces against the Syrian Armed Forces, and which reportedly benefited the terrorist group greatly.

    According to media and military sources, army units have since been able to break through ISIS defense lines around the town and managed to re-enter several neighborhoods.

    They also took control of the village of Hamdan and the nearby military airport.

    On Thursday, the London based so-called “Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said that the Syrian Army, re-entered Abu Kamal with support of the Russian Air Force, after launching an attack from the western, southern and eastern axis. 

    SOHR’s chief Rami Abdul Rahman said that the clashes were taking place in town, confirming the occurrence of Russian air strikes and intense artillery fire.

    “The military operation is being conducted under supervision of the pro-government forces”, Abdul Rahman was quoted as saying by AFP.

    Two days ago, six Tu-22M3 bombers also targeted ISIS in the area.
