Former US diplomat - "US military action in Syria violates international law"

WASHINGTON D.C., United States of America - Jim Jatras, a former US diplomat and adviser to Senate Republic leadership, has told Sputnik that the United States is violating international law by intervening in Syria.

“The claim to ‘go after IS [ISIS]’ doesn’t change any of this. Nor does it justify a dozen US bases in Kurdish-held territory in Syria,” Jatras said. “And it doesn’t justify the recent report where it appears US-supported forces cut a deal with IS to allow the evacuation of thousands of its members from Raqqa.”

Jatras highlighted that the Security Council never gave for the US to intervene in Syria, nor did it receive permission from the Syrian government to conduct its so-called war against ISIS.

“Note that this language does not include any authorization to use force under Chapter VII of the UN Charter – the only legal authority that can, in principle, supersede state sovereignty,” he said.

His comments were made on Monday after Secretary of Defense James Mattis said that Washington's intervention in Syria had been approved by the United Nations.
