Iraqi Shi'ite militias liberate Sinjar from withdrawing Peshmerga forces

October 17, 2017 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

The Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), a coalition of mostly Shi'ite militias, have taken over the Sinjar region in northern Iraq after Peshmerga forces withdrew from the area.

This vital area straddles on the border with Syria and the site of one of the largest humanitarian catastrophes in recent times.

When ISIS attacked Sinjar in 2014, it was assumed that the Peshmerga would provide protection, as was the responsibility of the Kurdistan Regional Government. However, the Peshmerga withdrew leaving the Yazidis vulnerable to a brutal genocide.

Now Iraqi forces have ensured that they will provide protection to the small ethnoreligious group now that Peshmerga have withdrawn from the region for a second time.

With the arrival of the PMU, Iraqi government forces arrived some hours later.
